Nippon Medical School Central Library serves undergraduate, graduate, and research students of Nippon Medical School; students of affiliated schools; faculty, staff, and alumni. Exchange students, trainees, visiting researchers, and others may also use the library with the permission of the Library Director.


To enter the library building, you must carry a valid ID card issued by Nippon Medical School.
If you forget to bring your ID card, or if the card reader doesn't respond to your ID card, please contact the library staff through the intercom at the entrance while the circulation desk is open.

On your first visit to the library, please contact the library staff through the intercom at the entrance so that your ID card can be registered at the circulation desk.

You must have a valid IC chip embedded card to use the library when the circulation desk is closed. For details, please refer to the Early Morning/Late Evening and Weekend/Public Holiday ExtendedLibrary Hours Guidelines below.
There is no librarian on duty on Sundays or public holidays (including the school anniversary, year-end, and new-year breaks).
When any change is made on the condition above, an announcement will be posted in the library/on the library website.
Early Morning/Late Evening and Weekend/Public Holiday Extended Library Hours Guidelines
To use the library during these hours To use the library when the circulation desk is closed, you must have a valid IC chip embedded card. If you have no valid card, please consult the head of the department where you belong. The library is not entitled to issue such cards.

The circulation desk will close at 7:00pm on weekdays and at 4:00pm on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. By five minutes to these times, patrons are required to exit the library. After-hour use is restricted to patrons with registered IC chip embedded cards.

about library use
On entering/exiting, tap your own registered IC chip embedded card at the card reader.
Turn off the lights and other electric devices after use.
Food, beverages, and smoking are not permitted in the library.
Checking out books is not available during the extended library hours. Return your checked out items using the book drop located in front of the library entrance. Audiovisual materials must be returned to the circulation desk to avoid damage. If you have a registered IC chip embedded card, you may place them into the specified DVD/CD dropbox in the library.
Please adhere strictly to the above rules. When the rules are ignored, the library privileges will be revoked.
The library is equipped with security cameras to ensure that library rules are strictly observed.
 
Stack access All library materials are kept in open stack. When you finished using or photocopying materials, please make sure you place them on the return cart.
Library staff will return them to the shelves.                       
 
Check out and return     
To check out Bring the library materials you wish to check out with your name plate/ID card/library user card to the circulation desk.
What you may check out Books and audiovisual materials for 2 weeks
What you may not check out Reference books (bibliographies, dictionaries, etc) , periodicals, and books in rare book collection
Renewal The due date may be extended for another 2 weeks from the date when the renewal request is processed. Bring your checked out items to the circulation desk with your name plate/ID card/library user card. Renewal is not permitted if the item has been reserved by others, or if it is overdue.
Return Return all checked out items to the circulation desk during opening hours.
Should the circulation desk be closed, return them using the book drop located in front of the library entrance.
Hold requests If the item you wish to borrow is out on loan, you may place a hold request at the circulation desk or by logging in to the MyOPAC feature on the library system.
Overdue penalty If you keep an item beyond its due date, further borrowing and renewing will be blocked until the item is returned.
If the borrowed item is not returned within a month after its due date, or you have overdue items frequently, your borrowing privileges will be suspended for a year.
Lost or damaged items

If you lose or damage a library material, you will be required to compensate for it. Please notify the library staff as soon as possible.

Library materials are shared possession of library patrons. Please handle them with care.

Books removed from general circulation
Books in the field of medicine are classified according to the National Library of Medicine Classification.
Books in other fields are classified according to the Nippon Decimal Classification.

Japanese and foreign journals are intershelved in alphabetical order by title. Japanese titles are converted according to the Hepburn Method.

WHEN YOU CANNOT FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
Some journals are available electronically on the library website.

It is possible that the item you wish to use is out on loan or at binding.

When the item you need is not available in Nippon Medical School Library collections, an inter-library photocopy/loan may be requested using the MyOPAC feature. Observing Copyright restrictions is required when requesting photocopies.
If the item requested is held in either of the Nippon Medical School branch libraries, it will arrive within 1 to 2 days. Items are sent via Inter-Campus Delivery.
When the item requested is not held at either of the branch libraries, it will be ordered from other libraries outside Nippon Medical School, and it will usually take 3-7 business days.
If you are in a hurry to obtain the item, you may visit other libraries yourself with a Letter of Introduction issued by the Director of Nippon Medical School Library, and request a photocopy directly.
When the item you need is not available in Japan, photocopies may be obtained from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), U.S.A. or British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC). Most items will take a minimum of a week to arrive at the library, and in some cases may take more than 4 weeks. The cost is usually between 1,300-2,000 yen.

Database search
Databasesare available from the computers on the 1st floor. You may access these services at any time from computers that are directly connected to the Nippon Medical School network.
The Cochrane Library on DVD may be used only on the designated PC on the 1st floor.
Database search manuals can be found on the library website. Queries regarding search techniques may be made prior to 4:30 pm on weekdays.
We also hold short classes on library searching techniques upon request. Please contact circulation desk for more information.

To print out the results of databese searches within the library, use the coin-/prepaid card operated-printer on the 1st floor.
The charge for standard black & white printout is 10 yen per page, full color printout is 30 yen per page.

Audiovisual Room 3rd floor :PDF Audiovisual Room may only be used on a reservation basis.
The library will accept reservations from the first working day of month prior to the desired day of use.

To reserve the room, please fill out a "Reservation Application for Audiovisual Room" and turn it in at the circulation desk. The form is available on the library website. Inquiries about room availability by telephone is accepted, but not reservations.

  • Reservation application is accepted at the circulation desk between 9:00 am- 6:30 pm on weekdays, 9:00 am-3:30 pm on 2nd and 4th Saturdays. 
  • Available hours: 9:00 am-6:30 pm weekdays
  • Should you find it unnecesary to use the room after having made the reservation, be sure to contact the library staff and cancel the reservation. Failure to do so will result in your privilage of using the Audiovisual Room being revoked.
  • To reserve the room, please fill out a Reservation Application for Audiovisual Room (PDF) and turn it in at the circulation desk. The form is available at the circulation desk. Please check the availability of the room prior to completing the form.
    You may make a reservation by logging into the MyOPAC feature if you have used the room previously.
  • Reservations via telephone are not accepted.
Multimedia booths
on the 1st floor
Multimedia booths may only be used on a reservation basis.
Reservations will be accepted from the first working day of month prior to the desired day of use.
To reserve a booth, fill your name in the "Reservation Chart for Multimedia Booths" at the circulation desk.

Inquiries about booth availability by telephone is accepted, but not reservations.
A valid Nippon Medical School academic network ID and password are required to use computers in multimedia booths.
Available hours: 9:00 am-18:30 pm weekdays
Patrons who have registered IC chip embedded card may use the booths between 7:30 am-10:45 pm (6:45 pm-7:00 pm excluded) on weekdays, and between 1:00 pm-10:45 pm on Sundays/public holidays.
Photocopy Services in the library Only library materials may be copied. You must observe copyright restriction when photocopying.

Prepaid card- or coin-operated photocopy machines/printer are available for self-service use. 1st floor is equipped with a full color photocopy machine and a printer, and other floors are equipped with black and white photocopy machines.
Standard black & white photocopy: 10 yen per sheet
Full color photocopy: 30 yen per sheet


The prepaid card vending machine and coin changer
a 1000 yen bill to ten 100 yen coins) is located beside the elevator on the 1st floor of the library. A 1000-yen prepaid card will produce 120 copies. 
A 3000 yen card for
360 copies is available at the student hall.
MyOPAC

MyOPAC is a personal library website for Nippon Medical School students, faculty, and staff.
MyOAC is restricted to registered users. For details, contact the circulation desk.

It provides the following library services.

  • Check your current loan, reserve, and overdue

  • Change settings for due date reminder emais
  • Reserve Audiovisual Room/Multimedia booths
