Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Oncology

The Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Oncology at Nippon Medical School Hospital consists of about twenty-five members who specialize in various respiratory ailments like lung cancer, mediastinal tumor, mesothelioma, interstitial pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic respiratory failure, bronchial asthma, pneumonia, and tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. Screenings and treatment are provided for all adult respiratory ailments.

Many sufferers of respiratory ailments come to the hospital with concerns about stubborn cough, cough with sputum or blood, chest pain, and trouble breathing. Many patients are also sent to the hospital after abnormalities are detected during X-ray screenings for a physical exam. For the initial exam, doctors speak at length with patients, perform a screening, take X-rays of the chest, and take blood and sputum samples. Bookings can also be made, as needed for additional screenings like CT scans of the chest, lung function tests, and bronchoscope examinations.

Appropriate diagnoses are made based on the individual patient's ailment, physical condition, and current medications being used, with a decision rendered on whether the patient should receive inpatient or outpatient treatment.

Outpatient Screenings
Initial examinations at the Department of Respiratory Medicine are from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. However, the above may not apply to patients with urgent respiratory ailments. Outpatient examinations for specialized cases begin in the afternoon, with screenings and tests held on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
